About the mu

The Mu is a global open-source startup community building through Pop-up Cities - temporary "micro-cities" where global and local founders, engineers, and researchers live together, share knowledge, ship daily, and build real friendships along the way.

We're not a conference. We're a hands-on builder ecosystem designed for both momentum and depth. For a few intense weeks, we drop into a local scene and build side-by-side with local founders, communities, universities, and sometimes public-sector partners to turn ambitious ideas into working prototypes, and create the kind of experiences that actually stick.

Pop-up Cities are built for real connection: you don't just drop in, you embed. You learn the culture, build trust, and meet the people shaping what's next.

Where the name "the mu" comes from

"The Mu" is inspired by the legend of Mu — a lost continent where knowledge and culture were said to travel across regions. We take that as the vibe: we create temporary spaces where knowledge moves freely, ideas get tested in the real world, and what we build becomes seeds for tomorrow 🌱.

Why open source

Because open source is how communities win. When we build in public, progress compounds: what ships in one city can be improved in the next, by anyone. Knowledge, code, and designs only truly compound when they're shared — that's how The Mu becomes more than events. It becomes a growing global commons 🌎.

Where we've built

We've built across Argentina, Japan, Ghana, Ethiopia, Thailand, and more. In Latin America, we also co-founded Crecimiento, one of the region's largest builder community networks.
